Hello,
does anyone here know if the Compaq Evo n610c Notebook PC is compatible with Windows 7? It installed OK, but no sound. When I check Device Manager the audio drivers have ?-marks on them and when I look at the HP/Compaq support page for drivers there is no mention of Windows 7, only XP, so it looks like yet another case of built-in redundancy.
Thank you.

This is an old machine and was built around xp architecture for the time.
Is this the model; http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11382_div/11382_div.HTML
before we go ahead.

OK, you could try this link http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=316664&prodNameId=316666&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=hb-18341-1
The limitations are that you can only run 1gb ram (I believe) max. And 7 is going to struggle anyway on that machine.
Just wondering how you upgraded?
Mike
Wondering how I upgraded? Well, I reformatted and partitioned the disk, set the BIOS boot-option to CD first, shoved my installation disk in the drive, rebooted and, hey presto, 'Windows is loading files...' etc.
Perhaps this is an analogy to that old yarn about the bumble-bee flying because it doesn't know it really can't fly. See, I didn't bother to find out about any compatibility issues in advance as the PC was to be scrapped anyway and so didn't know I couldn't install Windows 7. How's that?
I wish I could tell you it's my magic touch. Meanwhile the PC runs fine in all respects aside from the sound. I guess I'll just downgrade to XP and I'll be OK.
Thanks for the input Mike, talk to you soon:)

PS: I'll try the driver to which you provided a link. Who knows? I'll report back.
Meanwhile, here's proof that it runs: using my camera I took one video of the notebook booting into Windows 7 and one where I had reached forward and started Internet Explorer, then joned them:
I would run the Windows7 advisor - that will tell you whether there are any problems. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=20

Regarding the sound driver: nope, that bird didn't fly. How old is the Evo anyway? I have a HP Pavilion that is easily six years old which runs Windows 7 no problem, sound and all. (Windows 7 was but a gleam in billg's eye back then, I think). How explain that?
@whs: thanks, I'll try the advisor.
